Try our full-day, Volcano Safari, and experience a rugged hiking adventure that offers unparalleled scenic opportunities. Hike through a variety of Ecosystems, starting with a secondary woodland of mostly old mango trees, at the trail head, to a primary rainforest of virgin jungle, our islands best example of an "American Oceanic Rainforest" a place of many unique plants and animals. Then continuing all the way to the top of the volcano, we would eventually arrive at a height of 2800 feet above the sea to enjoy a dwarfed Cloud Forest, that cloaks the crater rim.
After picking you up from your starting point we would drive for about one hour from the Basseterre area, to the complete opposite side of St. Kitts, at Foys Mountain. This would offer you a chance to see the entire island of St. Kitts from the back of our comfortably modified Land Rover. On arriving at the trail head, we then set off on our challenging 2 hour hike, going vertically over 1800 feet to the volcano crater rim while covering a distance of approximately two and half miles.
The view from the Edge of this giant volcano crater, which is on average, one thousand feet deep and almost a mile in diameter, will leave you truly awed. The often called "Giants Salad Bowl" has lushly forested steep sides, and on the crater floor far below are steaming sulfur vents surrounded by a lush rainforest with a shallow freshwater lake in the middle. Also seen from the Crater edge are views of our neighoring off shore islands, on the twinkling Caribbean Sea.
